Dr. Assia Stepanian received her medical degree in Moscow at the I. M. Sechenov Medical Academy in 1992. She completed an OB-GYN residency at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Center for Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology in 1994. She has been involved in multiple research projects both in Russia and in the United States, and in 2005 completed an OB-GYN residency at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine in the US.

She was rewarded and completed an AAGL /SRS Fellowship in Gynecologic Endoscopy under Dr. Thomas Lyons in Atlanta and received additional training in reconstructive pelvic surgery under the auspices of Dr. John Miklos and Dr. Robert Moore.

Dr. Assia Stepanian is an accomplished endoscopist and a diligent researcher. She is the author or coauthor of many articles in both Russian and American Medical Journals on the topics of Pelvic Reconstruction, Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, abnormal uterine bleeding, fluorescence in gynecology, and sterilization procedures. She is currently a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, the chair of SurgeryU Online Media Journal Committee, and a member of the Advisory, CME, Resident and Fellows, Scientific Poster, Website, and Video committees of the America Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

Her presentations at international meetings have also addressed subjects such as the minimally invasive options for treatment of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, genitourinary malformations, robotic surgery, and various suturing techniques. She has been trained by her mother, Dr. Leila Adamyan, the developer of techniques in the treatment of genitourinary malformations, including vaginal agenesis, MRKH. Dr. Stepanian performs these procedures in the US.

Her devotion to education in Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery is best demonstrated by her founding and development of an educational media journal in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, SurgeryU, www.surgeryu.com,. This online library includes the world’s largest and first collective online video-library in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, involves an outstanding faculty, and engages members of AAGL. This journal was acquired by AAGL as a part of its educational campaign. Dr. Stepanian continues her work in SurgeryU as its founder and editor-in-chief.

Being a determined advocate of enhancing the patient-doctor relationship and communication, and a specialist in various types of minimally invasive gynecologic techniques, she joined Dr. Thomas Lyons at the Center for Women’s Care and Reproductive Surgery, where she is currently in practice.
