Curriculum
Leila V. Adamyan was born in Tbilissi in 1949. In 1972 she graduated from the Ist Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute with the diploma of physician. From 1972 to 1974 she has underwent residency, and from 1974 - 1977 - postgraduate education in obstetrics and gynecology in the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology (now Scientific Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (SCOGP RAMS) in Moscow. In 1977 she fulfilled and defended the thesis "Reproductive function in patients with ovarian endometriomas before and after surgery" and obtained the diploma of Ph.D. (candidate of medical sciences). From 1977 to 1989, holding the position of senior research fellow in the department of operative gynecology, L.Adamyan worked as gynecologic surgeon and fulfilled scientific research, which resulted in 1985 in doctoral thesis "State of reproductive system in patients with benign tumours of internal genitalia and principles of rehabilitative treatment after reconstructive plastic surgery" and the diploma of doctor of medical sciences (M.D.). Since 1989 Professor Adamyan is running the department of operative gynecology of the Scientific Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology, since 2007 she is holding the position of the Vice-Director of the Center (Director - Academician Sukhikh G.T.).

In 1993 she was awarded the rank of Professor. In 2002 professor Adamyan was awarded a title “Honored Master of Science of Russian Federation” and the Prize of the Government of Russian Federation in the Field of Science and Technics for introduction of endoscopic technologies in gynecology.

From 2002 professor Adamyan is the Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery of Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry. In 2004 she was elected an Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Being one of the leading gynecologists of Russia, whose scientific and practical interests are focused around the problems of woman’s reproductive health from embryogenesis till postmenopause professor L.Adamyan contributes into different fields of reproductive medicine. The trends of her research work and clinical practice are: • Scientific-organizing and legal aspects of reproductive medicine; • Physiology of reproductive system; • Genetic and embryologic aspects of reproductive health; • Modern methods of the diagnosis of reproductive disfunction; • Pediatric androgynecology; • Gynecologic endocrinology; • Assisting reproductive technologies; • To-date aspects of etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic diseases; • Aspects of care for reproductive and general somatic women’s health and quality of life; Modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic diseases in perimenopausal and geriatric age; • Oncogynecology: genetic, immunologic, surgical, medical, rehabilitative and reproductive aspects; • Operative gynecology and urogynecology: classic and and alternative approaches. Endoscopic surgery in gynecology. Practicing all conventional and advanced operating techniques, professor Adamyan is developing and introducing into practice new modalities of vaginal and combined operations, minimally invasive technologies (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy), new instrumentation, energies (electric, laser, ultrasonic, cryo, radiowave), and adjunctive materials, for treatment of most gynecologic conditions, providing the reduction of invasiveness and traumacity of surgical procedures and their negative impact on reproductive health. Under the guidence of Prof. Adamyan the Department of Operative Gynecology of the Scientific center for obstetrics, gynecology and Perinatology, which has always been the collector of the most severe cases from all regions of Russia and FSU countries, and the clinical bases of the Department of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery of Moscow state University of Medicine and Dentistry have established themselves as the institutions where endoscopy is applied in as many as 90% of all cases and most of the procedures are performed according to the original methods elaborated by L.Adamyan and her staff. The majority of operations are of combined character, allowing simultaneous correction of all gynecologic and concomitant surgical pathology. The most complicated procedures are performed by Prof. L. Adamyan, who is always being drawn in management of the most severe cases in the Center and other medical institutions as the expert. Prof. L.Adamyan personally contributes to research on the epidemiologic, genetic, neuroendocrine and immunologic aspects of genital endometriosis, which involves more than 2500 patients and has already resulted in classification of retrocervical endometriosis, programmes of preoperative examination (including the most advanced imaging techniques - MRI, SCT), and surgical and combined treatment, based on the own techniques, including combined laparoscopic-vaginal procedures for severe infiltrative endometriosis of recto-vaginal septum.

Prof. L.Adamyan developed alternative approaches to treatment of uterine myoma, including myomectomy regardless of the fibroids size and number, resectoscopic or combined laparoscopic-hysteroresectoscopic myomectomy. For radical treatment of uterine pathology, the original intrafascial laparoscopic hysterectomy, providing high safety and preserving pelvic architecture, has been elaborated. She has started to perform laparoscopic oncogynecologic procedures (lymphadenectomy + hysterectomy) for malignant uterine or cervical disease.

In over 2 000 patients with genital malformations, Prof. Adamyan has studied hereditary and enviromental factors possibly contributing to the disease development, and suggested a new classification, the programme of complex examination including to-date imaging techniques and endoscopy. Prof. L.Adamyan is the author of methods of surgical correcton of malformations of uterus and/or vagina (laparoscopically assisted colpopoiesis, laparoscopic removal of rudimentary uterus or uterine horn, combined hysteroscopic-laparoscopic metroplasty for bicornuate uterus, creation of a tunnel between the rudimentary non-communicating uterus and neovagina), benefitial for the patients' social, sexual and reproductive rehabilitaion.

Having studied all aspects (including urodynamics) of pelvic floor insufficiency, prolapse and stress urinary incontinence Prof. L.Adamyan has worked out various modalities of correction of this pathology, based both on the conventional vaginal and advanced endoscopic techniques (Figournov, Nichols, McCall, Burch, TVT procedures), which are of special value for young patients, allowing to preserve their reproductive function. Of great value are special programs of surgical treatment of pregnant women, pediatric and geriatric patients.

Having analysed the results of fundamental experimental and clinical investigations (in more than 2100 patients having underwent repeated surgery) of pathogenesis of adhesions formation and reparative processes in operated tissues and organs depending on the applied energies, synthetic suture and polymere materials, Prof. L. Adamyan elaborated the principles of rational use of surgical technologies, which provided two-fold decrease of the rates and severety of postoperative adhesions, significantly improving the reproductive results of treatment.

Prof. L. Adamyan has suggested and introduced in the department algorithms of preoperative examination, including the newest imaging techniques (SCT, MRI), allowing in course of only one investigation to reveal all pathologic processes in the organism and to elaborate the treatment strategy, and determination of CA-125, CEA, CA 19-9 and test of tumour growth for endometriosis, benign and malignant tumours, poviding the prognosis of the disease course. Prof. L.Adamyan carries out and coordinates scientific research on the adhesions formation, epidemiology and genetics of endometriosis together with Oxford and Leuven universities, the study of the ribonucleotide-reductase, cell iron, NO2, proteolytic enzymes, as the indeces of pathologic processes in human reproductive organs with the Institute of Physical Chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences, genetic aspects of gynecologic diseases with the laboratory of ecologic genetics of the Medical-Genetic Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

Prof. Adamyan is the author of 20 inventions in the fields of operative gynecology, secured by certificates. She has published over 1000 scientific papers for the past 36 years, both in russian and international editions, among which are the monographies "Postoperative adhesions",1998, "Malformations of uterus and vagina", 1998, "Endometriosises", 1998, "Genetic aspects of gynecologic diseases",1999, "Hysterectomy and woman's health",1999, "Operative gynecology - surgical energies", 2000, "Endoscopy in gynecology", 2000, atlases "Echography of small pelvis.
