Philippe KoninckxPhilippe R. Koninckx MD holds a degree is OBGYN and nuclear medicine invitro. Trained as an endocrinologist (PhD in Infertility and Ovarian Endocrinology), he started endoscopic surgery in 1986, and became the first in Belgium to perform hysterectomy and excision of deep endometriosis, as well as cholecystectomy, pneumothorax, and ureter repair in collaboration with the department of surgery. He engineered and patented various laparoscopic instruments such as the thermoflator (necessary for smokeless laser surgery),a needle holder, a uterine manipulator (the uterine rotator),a device for insufflating gas, (and together with his sons) a camera with orientation correction,a new insufflator with oxygen for adhesion prevention, a robot for endoscopic surgery, and a system for enhanced reality during endoscopy. Most products have been commercialized in collaboration with Storz GmbH, Tuttlingen, Germany. Dr. Koninckx is a full professor at the University of Leuven, Belgium and a visiting Professor at the University of Oxford, UK. He is the Head the division of endoscopic surgery, and director of the Center for Surgical Technologies (a Leuven innovation and training institute). His research interest, with over 150 full papers and chapters, are endometriosis, prevention of adhesion formation and hormone replacement therapy. He was on the board of trustees of the AAGL, and is currently a board member of the ESGE and the VVOG. He is an associate editor of Human reproduction and of the Journal of the AAGL, and on the editorial board of Maturitas and The European Menopause Journal.
